The first Minimalists

The Shaker’s dedication to hard work and perfection yielded timeless designs that have influenced countless modernist and contemporary designers all over the world. They occupied a small number of sites in the United States and only a few of them remain so it's a rare opportunity to experience Shaker objects in person and in context.

In collaboration with the Hancock Shaker Village and the Mt. Lebanon Shaker Museum, a group of designers participated in a week-long workshop conducted at two preserved Shaker sites. Full access to an extensive archive allowed us to engage in dialogue with the museum’s curators and interact with the objects. We were invited to interpret Shaker ingenuity and aesthetics and develop objects that are relevant to contemporary life.
